Missionary Moment - Puerto Rico San Juan & Dominican Republic Santo Domingo West

Good morning!

I love you all :)

I realized I didn't explain the title from the last message so let me knock that out real fast...

Dominicans and Americans have a very inappropriate relationship. Especially Dominicans that live in places where relatively few other Dominicans go..

Because of this their words and actions toward us aren't pleasing and can be quite annoying as we try to share principles of self worth and healthy attitudes and such...

It can also become a subject of humor with the right missionary with lots of time and plenty of experience with the people of the country.

One day I had asked Elder Helquist to give a slogan for the mission and the first thing he says was, "touch or be touched".... I'll explain.

"Touch" as in immerse... you gotta know the people and how they work. How they speak and why. And "or be touched"... is the very real sense as many Dominican women will try to take your hand or arm and say they love you trying to convince you that's its true... they almost have me haha but I think it's the school uniform and the backpack at 3:30 in the afternoon that gives it away 😂

This place is a miracle haha

The other honorable mention for the week is the Denque that my companion and I got.

Denque is kinda like yellow fever... but no yellow...the mosquitos carry it in the Caribbean.

It's pretty horrendous actually... lots of body aches and pains.. head ache, fever coming in and out at will

So we've been bed ridden since Thursday until... well right now. It hurts pretty bad. I ask for your prayers and ask also for the other many other missionaries that have it to. You guys are awesome 😁

Not too much else to report... church is true 🥰
